Troy Styles III is a freelance investigative journalist based in New York City, specializing in crime, justice, and victim-centered storytelling.
Troy Styles stands at a singular intersection in American storytelling—one where investigative journalism, victim advocacy, and cinematic narrative converge with remarkable force. As a true-crime journalist, show host, executive producer, media founder, and frontline investigator, Styles has shaped a new standard for reporting on complex missing persons, heinous homicides, mass murders, forcible abductions, aggravated exploitive crimes against children, and violent crime across the United States and beyond. His work is defined not only by its depth and rigor, but by an emotional intelligence rarely found in the sensitive genre of violent crime.
For Styles, every case is a life, every life is a story, and every story is a thread that weaves into the larger fabric of justice, humanity, and accountability. Styles emerged into the true-crime landscape not from the sidelines but from the center of the storm. His early experiences shadowing coroners, examining crime scenes, and engaging directly with families of victims gave him a raw, unfiltered view of what tragedy looks like before it becomes a headline. He learned quickly that the work is not glamorous—it is gritty, heavy, and unrelenting, yet rewarding and fulfilling. He has managed to find immense purpose in the resilience of families and in the clarity of truth, even when emotionally painful. Those experiences shaped the journalist and advocate he would become.
As founding Editor-in-Chief of Blunt Force Media Group (BFMG), Styles has spearheaded a national movement aimed at giving victims and families more control over their own stories. In a eagerly saturated media landscape often driven by speed, sensationalism, or detachment, Styles created a platform that centers integrity, accuracy driven narrative building, and profound empathetic compassion. BFMG is built on the standard that crime reporting should do more than observe—it should illuminate, protect, and empower. Styles leads his newsroom with an insistence on ethical storytelling, meticulous fact-finding, and deep collaboration with families and investigative agencies alike.
His leadership extends beyond journalism into organizational advocacy. As the founder of the Crime Advocacy Network (CAN), Styles built the first virtual peer-support ecosystem specifically designed for victims, families, and individuals directly impacted by targeted violent crime. Weekly support circles, resource guides, legislative advocacy, and trauma-informed community-building are all part of a larger mission: ensuring that no one navigates tragedy alone. In a field where families often feel forgotten and dazed once the cameras are gone, Styles has created a model where media and advocacy operate side by side, both driven toward wholeness and accountability.
Styles’s contributions to true-crime storytelling reach national audiences through CrimeDeskTV, a multi-show streaming television network dedicated to investigative journalism and immersive crime education. As executive producer and respected host, he brings a uniquely human-centered approach to true crime programming. His presence on camera is deliberate—calm but unflinching, analytical yet empathetic. He moves effortlessly between forensic detail, expert insight, and emotional context, making him an anchor for viewers seeking clarity amid chaos. Shows like Behind the Tape, Missing Whispers, Unsolved: Tracing Evidence, and Case After Case reflect his signature style: grounded, respectful, uncompromisingly thorough, and deeply attuned to the lived reality of those affected.
What distinguishes Troy Styles most, however, is his dedicated fieldwork. He does not solely report from in-studio. He stands in the places where answers are missing—rural roadsides, dense forestry, waterways, neighborhoods shaken by violence, and the living rooms of families holding on to dwindling hope. He coordinates search and rescue missions, interviews intense witnesses, collaborates with local and federal agencies, coordinates with legacy and national media syndicates, and often becomes the connective tissue between ravaged communities, victim narratives, and law enforcement investigations. In the case of Ronald Dumas Jr., for example—a December 2024 violent abduction that shook North Alabama and surrounding states—Styles became one of the strongest media forces in the search effort.
He not only broke the case exclusively, but he amplified the family’s voice, provided resource and guidance to law enforcement officials, mobilized multi-state awareness campaigns, managed press distribution, and kept the story thriving during critical periods when silence could have buried vital leads. His work on that case alone solidified his reputation as an expert journalist who does not simply tell stories—he fights for them with commitment and undeniable responsibility.
Despite the intense nature of his work, Styles brings a sense of groundedness and warmth that allows families to trust him with their most vulnerable moments. He builds rapport through presence, consistency, and a willingness to listen before asking. He understands that trauma has its own cadence, and he never forces a narrative. Instead, he lets stories unfold in their natural rhythm, giving families space to reclaim their voice and truth. That approach has set a new standard within the profession for how journalists should engage with those living through tragedy.
Another example of the defining cases of Styles’s career is the investigation into the disappearance and murder of 20-year-old Jessica Barnes—a young all-American wife and daughter whose life was diminished by the person she trusted most and longed to adorn her. Styles worked side by side with law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions, developing a coordinated strategy that kept the case moving forward and ensured the family’s voice remained constant. As a trusted advocate, he supported the Varvara family through every phase of the tireless investigation, as well as the adjudication process, coordinated and managed responsible global media syndication, and helped discover, secure, track, and preserve critical evidence in a case where the perpetrator attempted to erase every trace of Jessica’s existence by dismembering and burning her remains completely.
He gracefully delivered the official death notification to her closest family members and stood alongside them ensuring they were provided victim compensation funding to obtain professional counseling services, pay for burial cost, and seek intense healing as proxy victims of such a brutal, senseless crime. Ultimately, forensic specialists were able to identify her through a single remnant recovered long-bone and dental comparison supported by DNA he helped obtain from personal items, allowing her family to trail justice when her husband and two roommates were eventually arrested more than forty-five days after her violent murder at the home they shared together. In typical fashion, Styles was on-scene to capture their arrests and advocated on behalf of the family in live press conferences, published press releases, and scheduled court proceedings the same day.
Known among investigators and his audience as “the murder whisperer,” Styles possesses an unwavering demeanor that often compels even the most guarded and sophisticated criminal minds to open up and reveal what they have hidden at all cost. His rare ability to establish rapport in the darkest corners of human behavior has made him a formidable force in uncovering truth others cannot reach. Fearless, relentlessly focused, and driven by a profound respect for victims, he pursues justice long after the headlines fade—guided not by spectacle, but by duty, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to those whose voices have been diminished.
Styles’s work has also drawn both national and global attention, leading to his work spotlighted in Netflix docuseries’ and featuring regular appearances across major media giants including CourtTV, Law & Crime Network, NewsNation, Dateline, 20/20, and more. He has cultivated working partnerships with hundreds of legacy media markets and news directors across the nation, earning the respect of award-winning journalists who have come to know they can rely on his coordination, accuracy, and timely updates in highly sensitive investigations.
His ability to guard the integrity of each investigation and future prosecution—while still communicating clearly and compassionately in alignment with the wishes of the families he represents—has positioned him as a trusted and reliable collaborator in breaking news environments where accuracy is demanded and details are fluidly unraveling in real-time. Styles maintains integral, ongoing relationships with a host of the largest and most powerful leading publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, People Magazine, and HuffPost, to name a few, as well as high-profile crime commentators and expert legal analysts including Nancy Grace and other household names trusted by millions of viewers amongst diverse demographic audiences. These alliances amplify critical stories into households globally, incentivize tips, achieve mass dissemination and community awareness, and drive investigative momentum at critical moments when it matters most and time is on the pulse of expiration.
Behind the camera and newsroom, Styles is also an author shaping his personal experiences into powerful long-form work. His forthcoming book, Missing Whispers, explores his own journey through missing persons investigations, the most harrowing crime stories, and emotional recounts of the families he’s walked alongside, the cases that changed him, and the unavoidable weight that true-crime journalism carries by way of lived experience. Blending memoir, investigative analysis, and narrative storytelling, the book reveals the human cost of searching for answers—and the profound impact that humanity, hope, and transparency have on the path to justice.
His entrepreneurial ventures, including Brandology Pros and various digital media platforms, reflect a mind constantly in motion. Styles is never still; he was not manufactured for idle. He thrives in momentum, designing technical ecosystems and digital infrastructures that support not just storytelling but entire communities of clients, creators, and advocates. Whether building a crime support network, facilitating secure tips flooding his proprietary national CrimeDesk tips reporting center, or deploying case-specific 9-1-1 integrated hotlines for direct dispatch console communication, he is a techno-genius when it comes to the development and implementation of advanced technical frameworks to move information with lightning precision and detailed accuracy. With a focus on reliant data preservation and strategic backups, he approaches every project with vigorous exploration and multi-faceted comprehension, and a relentless drive to elevate and empower on a large-scale, taming mass chaos.
Before entering the world of true-crime journalism, Styles served as an international flight attendant for the world’s largest and most prestigious global airline—an experience that immersed him in a spectrum of cultures, exposed him to the dynamic tones of human pleasures and suffering, and deepened his understanding of what makes people both profoundly unique and universally connected. He enlisted in his airline’s global disaster relief response teams and deployed to some of the most notable disasters including a magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake with its epicenter near the town Léogâne, about 25 km west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti in January of 2010 with mass casualty and devastation.
Then Typhoon Haiyan — known locally in the Philippines as Yolanda — which made landfall in the early hours of 8 November 2013, hitting eastern Samar before sweeping across the central Philippines. It struck as a Category 5 “super typhoon.” Sustained winds were estimated around 195 mph (315 km/h), with gusts reportedly as high as 275 km/h, making it one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded at landfall trailing an official death toll of over 6,300+ Filipinos across the central islands. Styles commanded centralized relief efforts for multiple organizations such as Samaritans Purse, Doctors Without Borders, World Health Organization, Red Cross, UNICEF, and a list of military response teams.
This role sharpened his situational instincts, training him to anticipate danger, read subtle shifts in human behavior, and navigate crisis with calm precision. It also positioned him on the front lines of vulnerability, caring for strangers in moments of uncertainty, distress, and fear. It surpassed his tolerance of imaginable death toll with profound displacement leaving 4 million+ people without homes or shelter. but taught him resilience, tenacity and grit. That early foundation in global empathy and human complexity would later become a cornerstone of his investigative work, shaping the lens through which he approaches every story, every victim, and every dangerous truth.
